This year, I am honored to announce my collaboration with clothing designer, Sarah Nelsen
. We met at the beginning of the year at the AIGA
Homegrown Fashion event. We were both on the panel giving presentations and found an appreciation for each other’s work. Immediately after the theme, Gilded Summer was announced, we knew it was a perfect fit! We started talking, sourcing materials, styling using secret boards on pinterest, sketching at coffee shops and doing studio visits.

To be like “a bird in a gilded cage” is to live in luxury but without freedom.

Clothing by Sarah Nelsen: digitally created & printed silk
Jewelry by Sara Cramer: choker collar & cage bracelets
This collection explores the evolution of the “gilded cage” — from the Victorian Era to modern day. Elements from late 19th century fashion have been analyzed and repurposed for the digital age. We aim to create a seamless integration of multiple materials, textures and processes to showcase the rich complexity of the gilded age. Bead work and textiles become one cohesive statement while telling the story of the woman in the gilded cage.

One of my favorite pieces came from a mistake on my custom commission for an XL Circle Collar necklace. I always bead in timed increments to prevent back and muscle pain. I left off in the middle of my row and when I returned to the piece I forgot where I left off, creating a row where ivory and bronze meet. I decided that since I had put so much time and effort into this piece, I’d keep on going and make the mistake work in my favor. I love the way the asymmetrical pattern turned out! I finished the bride’s custom order and returned to the “mistake” adding around 40 hours worth of beading and tassel making to the piece. I was motivated to go above and beyond my original intentions because the panel of the fashion show announced a prestigious photo shoot with our sponsor, Mini Cooper! Not only was it featured in this photo shoot, but also chosen by Peregrine Honig, owner of birdies bridal and Artistic Director of the show. Peregrine also chose this look from our collection for the cover of the Pitch.
